National Underwriter has compiled the following table showing property-casualty insurer estimates of losses (in millions of dollars) related to the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Individual company estimates were taken from publicly-available reports released by the companies, including revisions in estimates made as of Sept. 24. Where a company reported a single amount rather than a range of estimates, the single figure was used for both the low and high estimates. Companies that write life insurance exclusively are not listed. Some estimates, however, include life insurance losses. Since most companies reported their loss estimates on a pre-tax basis, loss estimates for companies that reported after taxes were converted to pre-tax losses for comparability. The tax rate assumed for this purpose is 30 percent.
